    Description

WWI German East Africa (Deutches Ost Africa - DOA) Emergency Issue paper 1 Rupee (rupee) banknote.  These banknotes were issued when the British blockade of German East African ports prevented the importation of monies (coins and banknotes) from Germany.  This note was printed by the German East African (Deutsch Out Afrikanische) bank in Daressalam (Dar Es Salaam, then Tanganyika, now Tanzania). They were crudely printed on available (usually low quality) paper. Legend has it that a child's toy printing press using rubber type was used to print these bills.
This banknote is in very good (+) condition with two-signature authentication; no creases or tears, some very light staining and spots of ink bleed-through from ink stamps applied to the back. Marked "EP" on the top right and lower left corners; serial number 53466 stamped twice on the reverse.
This banknote was acquired from an antique dealer in Nairobi, Kenya, around 1995-1997.
