How Does It Work?
Cholesterol Relief - Dietary Supplement Helps lower bad (LDL) cholesterol. Policosanol contains several long chain fatty alcohols, including octacosanol, hexacosanol, and triacontanol. Animal and in-vitro research has shown that these compounds may support the cardiovascular system and inhibit lipid peroxidation as well as support macrophage activity.
Policosanol lowers total cholesterol levels by up to 21 percent, according to a study published in the February 2002 issue of the "American Heart Journal." Doses of 10 milligrams per day also decrease levels of low-density lipoprotein, or LDL, the bad form of cholesterol, by up to 29 percent and increase levels of high-density lipoprotein, or HDL, the good form of cholesterol, by up to 15 percent. However, policosanol did not have any effect on triglyceride levels, in this study. Policosanol might work by inhibiting cholesterol production in the liver. A long-term study on policosanol use in the elderly found the supplement to be safe and well-tolerated.
Improved kidney health in diabetics may be a benefit of policosanol, according to a study published in the July 2006 issue of the journal "Medical Hypotheses." Researchers note that policosanol inhibits an enzyme that can cause oxidation and inflammation in the kidneys. The study lists policosanol along with several other natural supplements, including vitamin E, lipoic acid, arginine, folate and vitamin C, that offer potential kidney-protective benefits for diabetics.
