Landwehr service award 1st class 1868
The Landwehr service award, 1st class, was donated by King Wilhelm I on July 4, 1868. The Landwehr service award (buckle) donated by King Friedrich Wilhelm IV in 1842 became second class. The 1st class could only be obtained by officers and doctors with officer rank who have remained in military service for at least 8 years beyond the prescribed total length of service and have distinguished themselves through their keen interest in the service.
An impeccable and unpunished performance of service was also a requirement. The total service time of 12 years and the 8 years result in 20 years, which can be found on the back -XX-. Initially, the total length of service was 17 years, so the officers had to serve 25 years. The voluntary 1-year service was counted as 3 years. The nomination lists had to be presented to the king by the War Office. The certificate was also issued by the War Department. The previously acquired 2nd class had to be taken. The award had to be returned upon the death of the borrower. The medallions were made of gold. Late pieces also have gilt bronze medallions.
Silver cross with polished edges of the cross arms. The insides are finely grained. Round golden medallions placed in the middle. A round eyelet with a band ring soldered to the upper arm of the cross.
Front:
Golden central shield with a raised fluted rim containing the ornate letters - W - R - and a crown above. The subsoil is fine-grained.
Back:
Golden central shield with a raised fluted edge containing the Roman numeral 20 - X - X -.
The subsoil is fine-grained.
